Google Can Talk

September 9, 2010

And it wants to tell us about Beyonce.  One of the newest creations of the Google Labs is the Scribe, which promises to help us think up search terms or complete our sentences some day in the near future.  You can play with it at http://scribe.googlelabs.com.  For now, it’s still getting the bugs worked out of it.  Its sentences sound like how someone falling asleep would sound if you asked them about anything in particular – the subject changes after a couple of words but the sentence keeps rolling.  It’s nonsense, but still entertaining to generate.

The following are continuous sentences I generated by always picking the first suggestion Scribe gave me for my prompt.  The first word or words I entered are unitalicized.  Whenever I get “the” it always would complete it to “these,” and “a” turns into “an” which turns into “any” which turns into “anything.”  It has a limited vocabulary, but soon it might be able to keep certain words instead of changing them for its first option.

So here’s what Google is interested in talking about:

Once you have these symptoms and use of these products are not intended to be used in their study of these two types of information that is not appropriate for all users of the catalogue should also be noted that there is anything you would not believe how much I loved them all and I’ma let you finish but Beyonce had one of these days I’ll bet your life on the road today and they are nothing but another form of therapy for these patients is not known whether these are the only ones who can not afford to pay for their own users and groups to their Friends / Favorites list yet, so I’ma keep popping up in their own right and do not want to be related to their particular field or industry in which they are attached to their respective owners and are strictly for viewing and printing of these books are nothing but another form of therapy for these patients is not known whether these are the only ones who can not afford to pay for their own users and groups to their Friends / Favorites list yet, so I’ma keep popping up in their own right and do not want to be related…

So, even though Google says it’ll let us finish, it wants to talk about Beyonce and how it’s going to keep popping.  I was trying to have Google tell me a story by starting with “Once,” so I tried to be a little more pointed.

Once upon a time, and then they will become more apparent from the following detailed description of these properties are not well understood and therefore not available for this item is available online at the comfort of your home close to your family and friends together for another year of amazing pictures online featuring the world famous Concise Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus for Blind and Visually Impaired Children Committee, therefore, that there is anything you would not believe how much I loved them all and I’ma let you finish but Beyonce had one of these days…

Google really wants to tell us about Beyonce.

I realized, though, that Google had been talking about Beyonce without the accent on the last e of her name, so I tried that one too.

Beyonce has some wide influences.  Thanks for sharing, Google!  So far I’ve always run into a loop using Scribe, so I invite you to try to find words or phrases that keep from repeating.  I don’t think it’ll ever finish its sentences either, so see if you can make it do that too!
